4 P’s
The four P’s; passion, personality, preferences, and principles. Most people, when considering career options only consider passion or what they enjoy doing. Even though passion is an important factor while deciding career paths, decisions about career paths based purely on passion remain unrealistic. Not only should you enjoy a job but important questions such as:
Will I be good at this job?
Does my personality align with the job’s requirements?
Does this job fit my principles and preferences?
These questions are important to address prior to deciding which job would be a good fit for you. For example, if your personal preference is to keep your hands clean for a job, then you would struggle with heavy-duty work like building or mining.
Lists
As we mentioned before, the only person who knows you best is yourself. Whenever you feel clear-headed and focused take the time to draft up some lists. You can make as many lists as you feel the need to but you should have two main lists. One revolving around fields you are interested in and one around fields you couldn’t imagine ever pursuing. Make the list as long as you want. Other lists which could help you get an idea about your career path could be hobbies you maintain during free time, fields you could easily excel at, comparison of career assessment results with your views, etc. These lists can help you step back and look at things from a bigger perspective.
Consultations
After you have come up with a general list of your preferred careers, you can go ahead and consult people. A good place to start can be career counsellors or professionals in the field. Consultations like these can help with unanswered questions and professionals of the trade are able to provide more information to you than you could find from internet research. A career counsellor can also help you identify your interests and abilities.
Self-Assessment
Self-assessment is the most important and crucial part of deciding a career because no matter how many people you consult or how many lists you make in the end the decision to choose a career path is upon you. Ask yourself some honest questions (e.g: What is really important to me in my job? Higher pay? Becoming an executive? Intellectually stimulating work? Better work-life flexibility? Enjoying the people I work with?).
