How to Ask for Pay Raise?

If you’re planning to stay at your current job for the future then you probably don’t want to be stuck with the same salary. As time goes by our needs and wants to tend to increase which is why asking for a pay raise is an important skill we should all learn to hone. It can be a nerve-wracking task but if done right can secure your goal of higher pay during a job interview.

LISTING YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The first and foremost step to asking for a pay raise is making your employer realize why you deserve one. What specific attributes have you contributed to the company that leads you to be deserving of a pay raise? Any goals or accomplishments you have completed for your employer no matter how minute they seem.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TIME
If the company is going through a financial recession or the manager is already under a lot of stress or workload it may not be the best time to bring up that you want a pay raise. If you have recently reached an impressive milestone or accomplishment related to the company you’re working for this may be a good time to talk about a pay raise. #

IDENTIFY A REASONABLE INCREASE
How much of a raise do you want? Before bringing it up with your employer it would be smarter to research the market trends and the average salary of your occupation. You can use data and figures from the internet to support a need for a raise or even ask fellow professionals of the same occupation you may know.

PREPARE WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY
Firstly, make sure you set a meeting or appointment with your manager in which you can exclusively discuss why you’re asking for a raise. Thank your employer for giving you a chance to pitch as to why you deserve a better salary. Make sure to always list professional reasons and not personal reasons as to why you require a raise. Make sure you list your accomplishments with figures and cited research if necessary. Avoid using words that may show you as unsure and underconfident in the eyes of your employer. Firmly and confidently pitch your speech whilst keeping it short.

PREPARE FOR POSSIBLE OUTCOMES
Make sure to go in with the expectation that you may be rejected from a raise. Your employer may also ask some follow-up questions. It is important that you answer them with confidence and certainty.

THANK YOUR EMPLOYER
Even if you get rejected for a pay raise make sure to thank your employer for taking the time out of their day to listen to your pitch.

Even if you get rejected for a pay raise right now doesn’t mean that you can’t ask for a pay raise in the future when you have an added list of qualifications and experience to show your employer.
